The premise of Love Thy Neighbour was simple: Eddie Booth is a staunch Union Jack-waving socialist, living with wife Joan in Maple Terrace and drinking down the Lion And Lamb with his mates Arthur and flat-capped Jacko ('I'll 'ave 'alf') and barman Nobby. Suddenly, new neighbours move in next door, Bill and Barbara ('Barbie'), who - pause for sharp intake of breath - are West Indian. Worse, Bill is a dyed-in-the-wool Tory. The name-calling begins immediately and, in truth, Bill is just as racist as Eddie, slinging 'whitey' epithets back at his neighbour. (Interestingly, these never seemed as derogatory.) The wives, by the way, seem to get along perfectly well; it is only the men who have the problems.
